My Wisconsin Hunting Excursion

November 21st, 2006

Yes, I have successfully completed my first Hunt. Was it worth the 10 hours (over 2 days) I spent hanging out with 12 year olds in Hunters safety class? It sure was…

The trip started out thursday evening. Brian and I drove to Waukesha, WI. We Got there around 10 or so, and pretty much just hung out until bed time. The next day we sighted in the guns(or tried as best as possible). My shoulder then hurt for the rest of the evening. Apparently shooting 10 or so Sabots out of a shotgun w/in 20+ minutes will do that to a guy. After that we went out and setup our blinds. Saturday, the hunt begins… Saturday summed up briefly. Sat in the cold all day, saw no deer. Sunday we left a little earlier so we could surprise the deer as they were rising from their beds. Apparently they don’t sleep where we were watching as neither Brian or myself saw anything by lunch time. The funny part is that both Uncle Tom and John had seen both Bucks and Does the day before, and Tom even saw some that morning. So after lunch we decided to mix it up a bit. Brian moved into a new blind and I sat in a not so perpendicular with the ground tree stand. Low and behold just as the sun was setting (about 4:05 PM) I see a doe (maybe 3) and 2 fawns walk by. Well every time Tom or John had seen a doe, it was always followed about 3 minutes later by a buck. Well I took a chance and let the 3 little ones pass by. Low and Behold about 4 or 5 minutes later here comes Mr. Buck. Well the single shot Mossberg didn’t let me down. Needs less to say I had shot my first deer, and it was a buck (albeit not that big on one) I’m going to skip the graphic detail of how and where I shot him, and the field dressing, but about 45 minutes later, younger brother Brian shot a buck of his own, but let him tell you that story..

So, in conclusion deer hunting could probably be renamed to deer waiting… But all in all it was a fun trip and all that waiting around was very worthwhile when I shot that first deer. Would I do it again? Absolutely!!! Plus I look like a red bearded pirate/mountain man so thats a double win! (Thanks to no shave November)

Thanks John/Tom (and Marge:) ) for the great experience
If you’d like some pics check out the Gallery (they’re towards the end.) Also, there will be NO proofreading on this post beacuse, 1. I’m lazy, 2. mountain man hunters don’t have to proofread

No Shave November

November 3rd, 2006

Yes it’s that magical time of year.  Time for No Shave November! And Yes, I know I appear like a child, but now I will be the scargliest looking 15 year old you know.

Know one really knows where this tradition originated from, but it’s something that all people (yes you girls can play along too) can praticipate in.  Here are the rules:

Don’t Shave

Simple.  Technically I suppose you can trim up this and that if your job requires it of you, but No Shave November (in it’s purest form) is just that, not shaving AT ALL.  Now ideally I wanted to do mustache month, but apparently that’s an even less popular idea then just letting it all grow.   It’s not to late to start so I employ you all, join me in the rich cultural tradition of “No Shave November”
