TENORI-ON (looks like a toy, creates music like a pro)

November 10th, 2008

So as some of you may or may not know, I like to dabbled with music.  Whether it be clumsily playing my guitar or tinking out a few things on my Axiom-61 usb Keyboard.  So I’m always on the look out for new toys to play with electronic or otherwise.  Well while scouring some of my normal sites on the net I bumped into a youtube video of a girl (an attractive one at that)playing with what looks to be a large extravagant version of the old Tiger hand held Lights Out game from the mid 90′s and singing along

Lights Out(cool huh)

Anyway, after being thuroughly impressed wth her, and her ‘toy’ I did a little investigation.  Her toy is actually a musical instrument/synth/loop buider (ok it’s kind of a toy too I guess)  It’s called the TENORI-ON and it’s made by Yamaha.  It’s really pretty cool, not just the simplicity of how it works and how you set loops, but the extra little stuff they put in the display how the notes, explode, or pop when they’re played.  This is the video that got me interested. (It’s a cover of Hot Chip – Ready for the floor)

And if you’re just interested in ‘little boots’ (the girl in the video) check out this link where she sings, plays stylophone, tenori-on, piano, and claps along.  It’s good stuff

Anyway, the christmas season is right around the corner, so if you don’t know what to get your tech friend who loves music take a hint.  Oh, MRSP is a scant $1200

Latest Trophy

September 11th, 2008

Here is my latest trophy.  Even though he wasn’t really.  He was CPR’d (catch, photo, release in case you were curious)  Lets just say he wasn’t my target fish at the time, but apparently he was hungrier than all other fish in the area.

Pike

as always, click for a larger picture.

Hype machine WordPress Widget (plugin)

November 29th, 2007

Well, here it is. A WordPress plugin for the Hype Machine. A while back I suggested to the HypeM team that they develop a plugin to allow users to list their current ‘loved’ tracks. I have yet to see one (but I’m about as patient as a 5 year old waiting for Christmas), however I have been told they will be working on one shortly.  So i created my own plugin. Personally I will only be using the ‘loved tracks’, but I have included all of the features that their current javascript ‘widgets’ will allow you to do. This hypemachine widget will do the following

  • Display X number of loved tracks
  • Display X number of tracks from your loved feeds
  • Display X number of recent tracks
  • Display X number of popular tracks
  • Display X number of now playing tracks

In a future release you’ll be able to do more like order the above listings, or anything else that HypeMachine users think would be useful. Suggestions welcome.

HypeM v2.0+ Songbird = near original Hype Machine functionality

October 31st, 2007

Well, it appears that by default the newly released version of Songbird 0.3.1pre includes a bookmark that integrates it pretty well with the Hype Machine. Granted it’s not the same as things used to be, but it’s about 5 times better than having to use the web interface for HypeM.

With this newly released “Developer Release” of songbird you can now have a playlist, regular media controllers, track length time/slider, a playlist etc. It’s a shame the player itself is so damn big, but as far as functionality goes it’s leaps and bounds above the current Hype Machine web interface.

In the future I’d like to whip up my own plugin or front end for the HypeM via either plugins/extensions or the webapi, but I assume that the HypeM crew will likely make their own (and probably cover it with Amazon and iTunes links) which would likely be prettier and more usable than anything I’d have time to develop.

So for all of you that commented down below I highly suggest you check out Songbird
I have provided a direct link to the latest  Windows Installer
Or you could just check out the songbird site on your own

So, You want the old Hype Machine back?!?

October 17th, 2007

Well I began by editing my previous post but thought this deserved it’s own recognition.
So, you don’t like the new hype machine. Let me guess, you miss the functionality of the flash player.
Well fret no more, it’s still there, just hidden. I whipped up a small little page w/ some links on it for you (being I couldn’t get a search box to work properly from w/in this wordpress post)

HypeM Flash Player Links!

EDIT: Looks like something was changed, the search no longer works. Tempted to look into a work around, however I’m guessing it was done for a reason.

EDIT: Looks like the search ability has returned, and everything is fully functional again.  Kudos to you HypeM

Musicians are doing things properly

October 9th, 2007

Well, as some as you know (or just assume) I am anti Recording Industry. Well, apparently there are some big name musicians that feel the same way I do. Both Trent Reznor of Nine in Nails AND Radiohead are two of the bigger names to publicly come out and say thing. Reznor leaks pieces of his albums so his fans can remix, or just enjoy his music. He has told his fans numerous times to steal his music, steal steal steal! Recently his current label has let him out of his contract (apparently they didn’t care for the message he was sending). Big things to come from this guy. Radiohead on the other hand has a new album out called InRainbows (get it Oct 10th) Currently there are 2 ways you can get it, sign up for a disc box set that includes vinyls, multiple discs and photos, OR you can download the album. 10 DRM Free songs at 160 kbps. What does it cost you? What ever you want! No seriously, you can pay them whatever you want for the album. No Seriously. I have already signed up (and paid for) my album. They’ll send you a link with a download code where you can download a 40 some meg zip file with the songs. My code should arrive shortly.
Hopefully other big name artists do the same, and the recording industry realizes the mistakes it has made.

Fishing for one

July 29th, 2007

I went fishing in the middle of the day this weekend. Which generally isn’t a good idea especially in the middle of summer, but it had been approximately 7 days since I went last and I needed my fix. So i loaded the boat up in the truck, threw my gear in, and i was off. The water was kind of cool so that was a good sign, although it was quite murky. Anyway, this is the first time I haven’t asked anyone to go fishing with me. Granted I have a small boat but it’s still kind of a task to maneuver to wherever I want to go and then get stopped and anchored down. Anywho, after finally getting situated to where i wanted to be and having numerous snags, I ended up getting a decent bass (which i thought was a snag at first, until my reel started letting line out without my approval) Caught him in about 8 feet of water on a 2in Chartreuse and Silver fleck tube skirt. I have a couple of poor pictures in my gallery. Hey it’s hard to hold a fish and take a picture of yourself!! The fishing after that went down hill. I got some bites but nothing decent (bullheads). Next time, I’ll probably find someone to go with, not for the company just so i can have a better picture ;)
